It degrades the original quality and wouldn’t be my first choice but for me it’s about simplicity for my end users so they don’t need to worry about anything other than pressing play. With Plex, Linux, and a Quadro RTX 5000 I can get 8 4K HEVC to 4K H264 transcodes when watching on devices that cannot properly display subtitles or for whatever reason. Intel Quicksync and NVIDIA NVENC make light work of 4K HDR to HD tonemapping as many have referenced in other threads with 10+ 1080P streams playing simultaneously. Sw support cripples even the best of CPUs. Hw support is necessary if you want tonemapping to run smoothly and for multiple streams. The best option is to always direct play everything but that’s not always possible for my case where you have various users with various devices and one file format (4K HDR) for all video content. I use Linux Mint as my "daily driver" personal laptop at home as it was a nice balance of hardware support to comfortable UI experience (windows-like, so switching to my company Windows 10 laptop is easy)ĮDIT: I've since also deployed Plex Media Server on a CentOS 7 machine at my parents (which was a NAS but not beefy enough for a VM so its just bare metal RPMs installed) so they can remote-watch a HDHomeRun cablecard easily on the go and so far no complaints with that either. I'm running it as a KVM VM so it was fairly easy to just spin up. I'm a software engineer by trade and mostly work with RedHat Linux servers at work, so I have my home VM host and NAS VM both run CentOS (CentOS 7 at the moment).įor Plex, I went with Ubuntu Server (in a VM) because it sounded like that was more supported by community documentation and troubleshooting and a trivial PPA and apt-get to get it fully installed and running.
